Phil,
Yes, I've only ever seen them with sliders. Dave. |

I have the crowned type with vertical lugs.

Wild supposition here without any sources to back it up, but given that the old RIC wore the same badge as the RUC, is it possible the slidered badges date from the rapid expansion of the RIC during the Irish War of Independence? With the formation of the Auxiliary Division and the so-called Black and Tans filling out the ranks of the regular RIC in 1920, there was a well documented shorted of uniforms which may have caused them to order more badges in a hurry, potentially with sliders?

Phil,
That's the first time I've seen one with lugs. But then you can never say never! But then again that badge has been in continuous use since 1939 so it stands to reason that quite a few batches must have been made since that time. The latest batch are slidered and stamped "Firmin". Dave. |
