Do you recognise this badge? SDF
Hello,
I have found a badge which I believe to be military, but I'm not sure. I haven't been able to find another example of it online. I have attached some pictures, but it is an SDF hallmarked silver badge, I believe it is marked Birmingham 1925 and has an incomplete makers mark of _S&S. The badge seemed to have a pin on the back which has gone. My thoughts was that it might be Sudan Defence Force, but the only examples I can find have a man on a camel on them, not sure if this is some variation? Any help would be fantastic. http://tinypic.com/r/14ya77k/8 http://tinypic.com/r/10prtxu/8 Thanks Nick |

It is a Sudan Defence Force as you believe it to be, they were formed in 1925!

Hello Nick,
It is a shame about the pin, but, notwithstanding still a very scarce and attractive piece of silver, I would be very pleased with it if I were you. Kind regards Frank |

Frank, do you know how it was worn? As a shoulder, collar or headdress badge?
It is a very nice badge indeed! |

Hello Nick,
I really must start to actually read peoples posts properly rather than just take a very quick glance at the pictures and open my mouth, I'm sorry Nick. These very fine badges were made by Edward Stilwell and Sons and are always marked as such, in addition, they always bare the seventh cycle Birmingham hallmarks for 1925, the year of formation of the Sudan Defence Force. They had showrooms on Saville Row back in those days and produced some superb pieces for the Colonial Forces throughout the empire. You can really see where the stylized "SDF" found on the tablets of their Camel badges actually comes from, interestingly, they also made this badge too and from memory, messr's Firmin also made a very fine other ranks example in brass. As I am sure you will know most of the camel badges are cast and can be really quite crude, however, some really nice cast examples were also made in silver too. Notwithstanding the missing silver pin, your badge is still a very fine and really quite a rare piece and you should feel very pleased with it. Again, kind regards Frank Kelley Quote:

Hello Frank,
Not at all, your previous replies and this one have been very intersting and helpful!! Thanks for identifying the maker. I will have a look in to them. It came with a number of other badges that I will look in to in the next week, none as obscure as this one I don't think. Anyway, thanks again for your help. Nick |

Hello Nick
Their mark on their silver was ES&S, in a perfect rectangle, they made a lot of very fine pieces for the Union Defence Force in South Africa during the period in question here too. Kind regards Frank Kelley Quote:

Ah I see, thanks for that. I didn't have a magnifying glass so could only make out the list three of the mark. Maybe that the "E" is rubbed but I'll try and get a glass on it to improve my poor vision!!
Thanks Nick |

Hello Nick,
You mentioned other badges, did you get anything else with it, I'm thinking you got it here and not overseas? Regards Frank |

Yes they came from a UK auction house. The others aren't as rare as the SDF I wouldn't think. But there is a KC Royal Artillery, a very nice looking South Alberta Regt (Canadian?) and a KC Army Service Corps.
Thanks Nick |

Hello Nick,
I would have been a little surprised if you had bought that overseas, a good number of British officers were attached to the SDF upon it's formation, in fact, I think from memory, Major John Pott's own father was in the SDF, Pott was, very much, a child hero of mine and fought at Arnhem with the Parachute Regiment, but, you do see so many others in this new unit and they all needed a badge for their helmets! Bet you are pleased you bought it now! Kind regards Frank P.S. Dare I ask which saleroom you bought from, clearly, you got a bargain, moreover, if they did not even know what it actually was! Incidentally Nick,
There is a Canadian section on this forum and I am sure that if you post your Alberta Regiment in there, there will be many people who will assist you. Frank |

Excellent I will take some pics and post on there.
Yes I am very happy with it, the SDF badge along with the others, and a French common pointed high explosive bomb (decommissioned obviously) for just £35, not a bad little haul. Ironically it was from Special Auction Sevices (SAS) and it was just marked as SDF silver badge, so I don't think they knew exactly what it was. |
