WANTED - WWII S.A.S. cap badge

This badge sold on another forum a month or two ago. I was being too picky and did not buy it because of the missing piece on the top left corner.

What are your thoughts on this piece. Should I be kicking myself for not buying it?

This is a more rare variant as worn in ww2 as from 1944 by Belgian and French SAS.

Just trying to learn about SAS badges from the many threads on here lately.

Would I be correct it saying that the badge you highlight on Brittons Badges was introduced in 1944 but was also worn for many years after WW2 also, making it impossible to say whether a badge of that pattern is a WW2 example.
Steve does not make that claim by the way.

Hello Simon,

I don't profess to be the SAS expert, but I can tell you what I believe.

The 1944 pattern beret badge was worn in the final years of the war. However, stocks were reissued much later when the SAS was reformed after the Malayan Emergency. Indeed I believe this is also true of the "rope backed" SAS parachutist qualification wing.

Hello Simon,

Sorry I don't know how long it was worn. The general badge design has remained unchanged, so I imagine the badge changed when the stock of the 1944 pattern run out. Exactly when is anyone's guess but probably in the early 1950s.

K&K gives a sealed date of 27th May 1953 for the bi-metal SAS headdress badge. Could this be from this date the 1944 pattern was no longer issued?

Please note my comments are educated guesswork. I don't have any official documentation to support my theory.
