Any explanation why it would have 9 feathers on one wing and eight on the other?

Hi Peter,

I think this particular wing originally had 9 feathers on each side. A few threads were lost on the way.

Cheers,

Johan

I don't have them to hand but I know one thread has gone. Also you'll notice the white thread along the top of the wings has gone, although remnants can be seen on the back. If I can remember where I put them I'll have a look again.

I was reading this thread last night re press studs on reverse so I thought I'd post my early one with only one press stud. This one has only ever had the one press stud.

Default Early wing

Hi Jack,

Very nice wing! Not seen before.

It is of course much easier to fix one press stud than two or three, which have to be perfectly aligned with their counter piece on the garment.

Cheers,

Johan

Thanks guys!

Seeing as we've gone a bit SAS wing mad on here recently I'll post this one that came with the one with the press stud. Both apparently belonging to the same soldier.

Default Wings

Friends,

A very special set of wings! I am amazed how crude they are in shape and manufactury, even for the early SAS!

They must be individual items that do not belong to any kind of batch of early wings as they are all unique.

Cheers,

Johan

If none of these patterns of wings has been seen before:

1) then who decides that they are indeed period genuine?

2) and what criteria does one use to decide that?

A panel of 8 insignia experts take the badges off to a secret location where the badge is evaluated on the following criteria

- smell
- taste
- consistency
- presentation

Only then if all the experts agree is an official certificate if authenticity produced

Hello Peter,
I think that is very interesting question and one which certainly deserves an answer, which I for one, will look forward to reading in due course.
Regards Frank
