For sale at present badge with a slider marked Butler 48 Victoria street Birmingham If Peter Seaman sees this post could comment on this. A maker I have not seen before or is not listed in the makers mark section

I have seen the MM, but only on reproduction items, it is not a mark which should appear on a WRC badge!

Hi all,

Here is what I think to be a locally made in India 3 piece 25th Dragoons Bm cap badge with clipped slider. It measures 35.6x26.5mm. Peter Seaman in 'for Hostilities Only' shows and describes locally made 25th badges in 3 pieces (Figures 51 & 52). Figure 52 is closest with the scroll ends go beyond the scabbards. The sizes are approximate I note. These are described with loops and so the (clipped) slider version I had not encountered.

There are a great number of variations (some more subtle than others) of Indian made 25th Dragoons badges, they come on both loops (undoubtedly used for both cap and collars) and to a lesser extent on vertical shanks/sliders which can vary in length from what you would expect to find on a UK made badge to quite short examples.

Your badge is a genuine one.

There are just so many Indian made badges for this particular regiment, about the best I have seen attached on left, a typical example made here, for comparison at right.

Hi Dean,

A cracking badge! And, in my opinion a badge that emulates the J.R. Gaunt pattern on closer inspection, alas not Fig. 52 & 56, which incidentally would appear to be the same pattern badge.

That is, I believe your badge is a cast example taken from the UK Gaunt produced badge. I've personally seem more examples of this pattern with the loops, and to my knowledge - to date - it is one of only two Indian made pattern 25D badges adorning a slider; the other rather scarce badge being portrayed by Frank.

Unfortunately, my phone doesn't appear to be compatible with the Forum, so I will endeavour to post some detailed comparison pictures of the UK and Indian made badge.

Indian: lugged and slider.

These two are representative, as I have three of each pattern/type.

The Indian ''emulation'' scroll is on top.

The reverse of the hilt on both patterns of badge showing the casting effects; also, the ''Gaunt-notch'' found on many genuine Gaunt 25D badges from the ORs to officers' examples, and hence replicated on the Indian castings too.

And, even the trait in the form of the ''slope'' observed on the single middle numeral can be seen featured on the Indian badge.
