Default SIH

There was an officers bronze version and an other ranks one for sale at Clanfield recently. They were not particularly expensive considering their rarity. Both gone now, but the pics are still there.

Default South Irish Horse

Hi,
could someone tell me if this item was worn by a WW1 soldier or if it is a replica. It cost twenty six pounds and was sold as an original.
Any help would be much appreciated as I'm new to all of this and putting together a classroom display.
Kind regards

Default A bit of brass nothing more

Hi,
I think, for what it's worth, you've been sold a 'Pup' there. Get a refund if you can because that style of badge can be picked up for between £4 and £6. See post number three above for a comparison between good and fake.

Thank you Doug.
I was disappointed to read that. I would love to have a genuine one for the display and to wear on Patrick's Day.
How much would a genuine badge actually cost? Did they all look the same? Are there any features I should look out for or avoid?
Kind regards.

The link below is from Clanfield. It looks like a dud to me.

Default Genuine SIH badge

Could not edit the original post to add this image, so have made another post.
This one is a genuine badge, solid and with a slider. This came from a deceased estate with medals and buttons and a photograph from 1914 showing this badge in the centre of a montage of photos taken in May or July 1914

This is a recent buy not sure about the colour(more bronze than gilt/brass) but it has the look and feel of a genuine badge,(lugs appear to be replaced)opinions welcome.

A nice badge won from Bosleys recently. South Irish Horse rare officers gilt cast cap badge with small slider. That's my funds for the year gone

Cheers,

Gaz

Default SIH pouch badge

Hi Gaz,
Even rarer than a cap badge, it's actually an SIH officers pouch badge. Though I'd have expected it to have screw stubs on the rear and not a slider. Might be a variation. A very nice purchase though all the same.

Default SIH pouch badge

Hi Rockape,
Just the piece from the Irish Sword quoted from the first page of this topic:

The dimensions of the arm badge are not given, and I have never seen one either in collections, museums or sales catalogues.

Also attached a page of line drawings. M is the officers pouch badge and cross belt badge. Also of interest regimental buttons were worn by those who had served prior to the outbreak of hostilities with the GS pattern button issued to those who volunteered during hostilities.

I am pretty certain there is no breach of copyright posting these.
This link is to the image John used in his post.http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...0&d=1212705606
And another photo of two more, one in gilt and one in bronze.
In the article from the Irish Sword there is a painting of the SIH uniforms and the pouch badge is used on the flap of the pouch, also on the front of the shoulder strap with a whistle attached by a short chain. The badge is also shown on the extended collars of the officers mess dress and I feel this is the example you have. I'll dig out a colour photo I have of the illustration and see if I can upload it here.

Hi again,
Here are some photos from the article mentioned above and a black and white photo of Capt JW Bayliss SIY and SIH, you can just see the pouch badge and chain in this one, only if you look closely....
