Default Guards LRDG Blazer Badge

Just found the attached blazer badge amongst some other items on a junk stall.

Thought I'd post it as it is probably a one off.

Cheers

I have wracked my brains over this comment and cannot see the spelling error.

The usual LRDG related spelling error is to describe them as the Long Range Dessert Group as if they deliver puddings over vast distances. Which, now that I think about it, could be a great advertising slogan.

I think he's referring to the motto, in my opinion an easy thing to do, if not an error of the maker. Regards Mark

Indeed it says 'non vi sid arte' instead of 'non vi sed arte'.

An interesting take on the motto here:
https://jeffbeaty.com/2016/03/non-vi-sed-arte/

Please excuse the following ramblings, given various uses of the motto, but the following struck me as potentially interesting

I have not fully researched the use of the motto back to todays 'Special Boat Service' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Boat_Service but have heard accounts of it being associated with Roger Courtney of Commando Special Boat Section - I think this may arise through confusion of the abbreviation SBS. Roger's brother Geoffrey suggests adoption of 'Excreta Tauri Astutos Frustrantur' ('Bullshit Baffles Brains') for Commando SBS. I have an idea that 'Not by Strength by Guile' was adopted by Jellicoe's Special Boat Squadron - If so, this is an interesting link between the Beatty and Jellicoe families (recalling respective exploits at Jutland) ie Jellicoe's son's use of the Beatty family motto.

Any thoughts appreciated - PM please if a diversion from the main subject of this thread

Mike

A slight variation on the Commando SBS motto: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obi...-obituary.html

Thomas - interesting. Thanks M

Relevant extract:

Then, in 1967, Everett supervised the last months of the building of the new submarine Onyx, its trials and introduction into service. He also chose the boat’s motto, “Taurus Excreta Cerebrum Vincit” (Bullshit Baffles Brains.)

Comparison here:

https://www.scotsman.com/news/obitua...lmour-1-796380 - great obituary

Gilmour always derived quiet amusement when recalling the SBS motto "Excreta Tauri Astutos Frustrantur" (Bullshit Baffles Brains).

Hoping folks do not mind this diversion from the thread - hopefully of interest
