Default "The Light Artillery" Title

Hello all,

Does anyone out there when precisely this title (yellow on black) was worn? Peter's book refers to it being worn for a period of 18 months, but when precisely would that have been?

If anyone out there does now, I'd be grateful to hear from you.

Best regards

Jonathan

In September 1941 THE LIGHT ARTILLERY shoulder titles where authorized to be worn by 455, 456, 457, 458 light Batteries. In October they underwent intensive training for Combined Operations, 455, 456, 457 joined the Royal Marines Division in 110 Force.
455 Bty went to Madagascar with 7 Commando who had opposed landings against the Vichy French. Eventually ending up in 14th Army in India /Burma.

456, 457 Bty's joined 1st Army in N Africa and Italy.

In December 1941 458th Bty being judged the best Light bty where chosen to be Airlanding as part of 1st Airborne Division. later renamed as 1st Air landing Light Bty. The title THE LIGHT ARTILLERY was worn alongside the usual Airborne title and pegasus, until 29th November 1942 when ordered to remove ALL woven titles. Title in use, All told 14 months.

The other 'Light' Batteries stopped wearing it around the same time but records are inconclusive.

455 Bty as 14th Army wore their's on the Bush Hat in Burma.

My goodness TynesideIrish, what a comprehensive and supremely helpful response - thanks very much indeed for the effort!

One supplementary question if I may. I'm a collector of cloth to the Italian campaign. Would I be right in saying that 456 457 did not wear this title in that theatre?

Thanks again

Jonathan

456& 457 Bty's wore it until Nov 42. I don't know when they left North Africa for Italy, if it was after Nov then they wouldn't have worn it there.

Thanks again Tynesideirish - it's crystal clear - not worn in the sicily/italy campaign.

Best regards
Jonathan

Default How About Rough Riders?

That was a great explanation on the Light Artillery Title. How long was the ROUGH RIDERS title worn? Thank you.
