Default 141st RAC (The Buffs)

Hi Gents,

Perhaps an obvious question but ...
141st Regiment Royal Armoured Corps (The Buffs) landed in Normandy, but what cap badge was worn on the black beret .. RAC or Buffs ?

Thanks ..
Best regards .. Herve

The RAC battalions converted from infantry are mentioned in a few threads on the forum, including this one:

I know I listed 141 as wearing the Buffs badge but haven't read throug the posts for some time, what I said may be contradicted elsewhere.

They wore nickel plated Buffs badges. Photos of them in Normandy do confirm this.

However beware of silver-finish Birmingham mint badges being sold as Buffs RAC.

Herve,
141RAC wore both the brass and nickel plated Buffs badge. A veteran I met had his brass badge and said he’d never been issued with a ‘silver’ i.e. nickel badge.

Hi Guys,

Thanks ... rather complex for a French brain !
I understand that "nickel or chrome plated" must have been made in the field.

Alan, "However beware of silver-finish Birmingham mint badges being sold as Buffs RAC."...
What do you mean, could you show one of these ?

Best regards .. Herve

Not made in field. The regiment had the issue brass badges nickel dipped in the UK.

Mint are these: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ictureid=31362

From the book "Flame Thrower" by Andrew Wilson (Capt, MC, 141 Regt RAC (The Buffs) , p 14 - Regimental Funds, "It was there to be used for the men's welfare" "The money had been left to accumulate except for some outlay on items like paint for inspections and an unofficial silvered cap badge for the men."

Hi Alan & Tim,

Thanks, IMO impossible to be confused with a ww2 one ...

Mike, "silvered" could mean : chrome, nickel or silver plated ?

Best regards .. Herve
