Default 5th London Armoured Car Company (Sharpshooters)

During the period 1920 to 1922 the Sharpshooters were the 5th London Armoured Car Company, as at the time of their famous poster.

May I ask please if anybody has ever seen an example or reference to a cap badge or insignia for this period.

I suspect, and this is speculation, that they wore the RTC cap badge. Many other Yeomanry units converted to RTC badges and headdress before reverting to their original 1908 pattern badges in the 1920's and 30's.

They are unlikely to have worn the badge with the 3 numeral on it when raised as the 5th London Car Company and in the absence of a bespoke 5th badge, then the RTC is the most likely.

Also, who were the 1st to 4th LACC and why did the Sharpshooters soon become the 23rd.

From the CLY website: "Two years later they were renumbered 23rd to avoid confusion with the regular RTR Armoured Car Companies. "

From the WD website:

On 11 March 1920, the regiment reformed with the title 4th Armoured Car Company (Westminster Dragoons).

The 1922 re-titling resulted in 8 Yeomanry regts as Armd Car companies:

19th (Lothians and Border) Armoured Car Company,
20th (Fife and Forfar) Armoured Car Company,
21st (Gloucestershire Yeomanry) Armoured Car Company,
22nd (London) Armoured Car Company (Westminster Dragoons),
23rd (London) Armoured Car Company,
24th (Derbyshire Yeomanry) Armoured Car Company,
25th (Northamptonshire Yeomanry) Armoured Car Company,
26th (East Riding of York Yeomanry) Armoured Car Company,

Now as the 4th and 5th London Armd Car companies are accounted for as the 22 and 23rd, its likely that 1-3 companies were the Lothian, F&F and the Gloster Yeo in 1920-22. Certainly F&F were originally numbered 2nd F&F Armd Car Company. There was not a 1-3 London Armd Car Coy as the 1-3 were other parts of the country.

According to Mollo’s ‘The Sharpshooters’ they wore the usual style badge with Roman numerals XXIII in the centre, worn 1920-1938

Obviously that cannot be right if they were not the 23rd until 1922. It's not possible for them to have worn the badge until they were re-numbered.

Hi Allan, from what you say, can one assume 24th,25th and 26th were titled 6th,7th and 8th ACC? Also thanks for the information, very good, best wishes Mike

Good point, well presented! Your RTC thought seems more likely in the absence of any 5th bespoke badge.

The Northants were indeed the 7th Armd Car Company.

When I googled it a couple of results suggested it may be what is now Allitsen Road NW8. On google maps seems there’s quite a lot of ‘modern-ish’ estates on that road now.
