Thought I'd share my latest acquisition - a very rare 5th Gurkha badge. It was worn by officers on the forage cap and service cap from 1922 > 1927. The date can be attributed so accurately because the crown was added to the badge after there was a change in title in 1921 and the "Royal" was added. By 1927 the Regiment had decided that the crown alone was not distinctive enough and the Lion was added to the crown. There is an example of this badge in the Gurkha Museum's book on the 5GR - however its silver hallmarked with Maker's mark G+S Co. Ltd ( Goldsmiths & Silversmiths) This badge is clearly locally made but no less genuine - possibly used for other ranks or used to supplement the UK supply ?

I saw it on eBay and pondered why it had so much early attention.
Thanks for the explanation, a nice piece and glad it went to a good home. |
