'7t2ndSwinger', on the GWF, kindly informed me that the 29th, 30th, 31st and 32nd London Regiments wore a "Red [number] on black small rectangle" as a cloth S/T. I think he got his information from the IWM.

There is an article on London Regt badges in, I think, the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research, written by ? E Martin in the late 1930s.
Otherwise, there will be records at the NA under WO - mostly in the RACD papers. |

The article by Ernest Martin referred to by KLR is in the SAHR Journal ( I only have copies and not the actual Journal so cant say the date ) and whilst it is interesting and contains a lot of details on insignia there is probably more information today on this Forum and on the GWF than in the article.
(Couple of sample pages attached ) P.B.

PB
On one page it dates the Rangers 3rd badge to 1937. Does it give a date for the rarer 2nd pattern one on the previous page? Alan |

The artic;le was published in Volume XX - which I think was 1941 - pages 1-10. There are runs in a number of libraries.
Orasot's Pattern Cards illustrates exactly what I meant by RACD data - you'd get more from looking up their archives at the NA than any article which, as Peter says, is probably out of date now that WO papers are publicly accessible ! |

KLR, thanks for mentioning this journal, the articles look very interesting. Thanks also Peter, as I was just about to try and look it up.
Wilf, Sorry to bang on about it, but can I ask if the background for those cloth titles (29th - 32nd Londons), is khaki rather than black? It is just that I noticed that is how the IWM refers to them. 29th London Rgt. IWM Cheers, Chris *Upon closer inspection of the actual photograph, ...Ahem ![]() Last edited by Drew; 25-05-17 at 12:51 PM. Reason: Format |
