One of two pics I bought from the bay, sadly the seller was splitting a photo album from I assume a RWF officer.
The original is lovely and sharp which will not show here. It shows a captain and a major and perhaps a more senior officer with medal ribbons at the back, though his rank cannot be seen.

Jerry,
What a lovely quality photograph, some of those old black and white photos are brilliant, thanks for sharing. Rob |

Thanks Rob. It is a very sharp pic that the hosting here does not do justice to, unless I post it in small sections.

I seem to recall that the pattern of badge worn by the officer in the last image was a TF badge? Having a flame pattern more like the NF than that of the RWF. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=21365 Great images and thanks for sharing! Andy |

Indeed Andy, I had thought that it is TF whilst the officer behind him has the narrower flame version as does the officer to his right, though in the latter case it is not so clear. .

It could also be just a case that the particular manufacturer use the NF grenade and fitted a RWF overlay? There's also a S&G version.

Another picture from the same album was shown on another forum-sadly they seem to have been spread far & wide- which showed the senior officer sat amongst a group shot with a shield shaped unit ID board which list them as F company 3rd Garrison BN and is dated 1911. Not my pic but it still has the sellers watermark from when it was listed on ebay so I assume it is OK to add it here. I have two more pics from the same album that I'll add later.

I am puzzled. I know of no Garrison battalion of RWF in 1911. Is that really the inscription on the shield please?
In 1911 as far as I know the RWF had but 7 battalions: 1st and 2nd Regular 3rd Special Reserve 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th TF. |

It of course reads 1917 not 1911.
Posted by Hywyn on the RW forum. Commanding Officer(s) (P403 RRRWF Vol 4): E H Thurston to 6 June 1916 G W Priestley to 1 June 1917 C E Willis Given the location on the photo and going by this "Formed at Wrexham in February 1916. Moved to Abergele in November 1916 thence to Rhyl and Gobowen. Moved to Oswestry in June 1917 and to Ireland in November 1917, when it went to Cork. Went on to Crosshaven in March 1918." he is Willis with a slight chance of being Priestly. As a matter of fact, as I type, it occurs it might be a 'leaving photo' for Priestley? All that supposing that the man is the CO of the whole lot and not just of F Coy. As I say I know virtually nil about the Officers.

The other pic I got at the same time as the one above, sold as RWF but the fusilier badge looks a bit wide so RF or NF? It is obviously from the same album but not as sharp an image.

The third of three pics that came from the same album.
It shows the senior officer messing about, but also shows the flash on his back.

I think it shows an RWF officer Jerry. The flames were provided in different configurations during WW1 by different suppliers and were accepted because of shortages. It was basically the RWF dragon added to a RF or sometimes NF grenade backing.
