Hi Peter, and others,
I believe your man is a Chaplain wearing the YMCA badge. Here are similar photos of a known YMCA Chaplain who worked with Indian troops during WW1. The first photo is marked on back: "Some Christians of Remount & G.I.B.D. plus Ragaswamy." The second is marked: "English Class, La Valentina, Marseilles, Jan. 1919" Cheers, Tinto Last edited by Tinto; 05-11-12 at 09:02 PM. Reason: Typo correction |

Gents,
Thanks very much for your replies and for your interest. ---------------------------------------------------------- Tinto, A shame 'your' Chaplains' badges are not a touch clearer, though they look to be the same as my example. I wonder if the YMCA cap badge was a generic item for all those who served with the organisation and not exclusively a Chaplin's badge? Then again, as a Christian organisation, would they have served in any other capacity? Afraid I am shamefully ignorant of the YMCA's role in the Great War. Great to see your pictures, and thanks very much for posting them. Regards to all, Peter. Last edited by Peter J; 06-11-12 at 07:39 AM. |

Hi Peter, I am wondering what the badge is on the RFC (officer/flying cadets ?) left arm, under his shoulder titles is?
Very intresting photograph. I had a friend who died several years ago who had been a life long member of the Salvation Army. He had some lovely pictures of his friends in battledress with SA insignia, I think he called them the Red Shield? They did everything from conducting services in the field to handing out tea and cigarettes etc. Dave |

Hello Dave,
How's you mate? It does look like a badge, but it is in fact merely a mark on the surface of the photo. I should apologise for not stating this earlier, but well spotted nonetheless mate. Peter. |

He may be a minister of religion working for the YMCA, or he could be a lay preacher or just a volunteer in the Young Men's Christian Association. He's not a Chaplain to the Forces though.

Peter: Re your 'shamefully ignorant' comment, following may help: http://www.worldwar1.com/dbc/ymca.htm
It's a U.S. YMCA overview of WWI service, but probably pretty similar for other allies at the time. England, Canada and Australia all had YMCA services contingents with their expeditionary forces. The Canadian 'PX' badge is a maple leaf badge with the YMCA triangle and PX, but the Australian badge is the same style as yours.
