Default Gordon Highlanders 1939 or 1959 dated Sporran.

I picked this up this morning and will be offering it for sale at some point.

1939 or possibly 1959 dated, difficult to read the date. The owner's Army Number is in the post war numbering system so possibly 1959.

The makers mark appears to be the same as this one , would the date be related to when they got the contract rather than when the sporran was actually made/issued ?

Service number 22137348 was in the first batch of eight digits , so pre October 1950.

Thank you fot your input.

I imagine that the date is the date that the contract was signed for X number of Sporrans. If it was for say 2,000, they were probably made in 1939 to complete the contract. However, they were most certainly not all issued in 1939 as this type of sporran, to my understaning, was not used during the war, at least not on overseas service. They were probably reissuing old stock in 1950 as uniform had reverted to the pre war regulations.

I may be way off (as usual ) but my thinking was that the contract would be for the basic leather parts of a standard "Scottish Handbag".

These "1939 Pattern" items would then be supplied to Outfitters/Manufacturers who would customise them for the various regiments .

The same basic design/pattern was probably used for a long time until a new style was introduced (similar to 37 pattern webbing > 58 pattern webbing).
