Default Maritzburg Rifles Cap Badges

All recently acquired a second version of the Owen 379 Cap Badge, which I believe to be a Maritzburg Rifles Cap Badge.

Would appreciate others views on whether I have an officers and Other Ranks striking or if this is just a case of a variant.

Owen has these in his book as Mauritius Railways badge.

The Maritzburg Rifles as far as I am aware amalgamated to form NRR in 1889, so they would not have worn a KC cap badge.
