England roasting!
I note the news reports of very high temperatures in England (and Europe) with measures taken such as wrapping Hammersmith bridge in foil to prevent cracking. I can only imagine many historic old structures must be subject to heat related issues, not to mention the ordinary houses and residents.
I believe such summer temperatures have become more common in recent years? CB PS, Perhaps the Guards will have to adopt the FSH again for summer duty! How about Punkas for the barracks?

Intemperate Weather
For all members of the Forum residing in the U.K. Saying prayers for you all as you endure the present intemperate heat over there.
Please, listen to the advice of your health care professionals. Drink water, only go outside if you absolutely must, ventilate as much as possible. Call it selfish, but I need you all to be around for some time as I still have lots to learn. Thanks. Regards, Ian

Well....
Everything is relative, I guess. Downtown Sydney in January, I might just be a little grease spot on the pavement. In parts of Canada in January, I'll wager I'm running around in just a sweater while you're bundled up like Nanook of the North, with chattering teeth and frozen toes wondering if you'll ever get warm!! Guess it's what you're use to.

I have seen photos of the fires in the London area. Looks like California now with brown grasses and burned structures! I could never have believed it.
I understand that the fire brigades are not accustomed to such fires, unlike here wherein there are special fire fighting units and training for them. CB

England roasting
Nice and cool today, temperature dropped around 15 degrees in North East England ! Getting mixed reactions on the news from the public about the weather actually being news - it's hot - causing disruption in UK is first topic on the news - yes it's hot, it's summer middle of July. In a few months time - it's cold - yes, it's middle of winter- causing disruption in UK. We must be the most unprepared country in the world for weather related issues.
The actual time this heatwave has been an issue where I live - 2 whole days ! Mark |

I think that’s a understatement. Appreciate up north it may have just got warm but that we saw temperatures of over 40*C totally unheard of in this country probably since before the last ice age and London Fire Brigade experienced their busiest day putting out fires (many of them grass fires) since the Luftwaffe shows the situation for what it was in much of the UK.
Personally I think power cables exploding, rail tracks warping, runways melting and grass fires akin to the outback in Australia is news. Yes it may be this hot in Dubai, Australia, the Nevada Desert on a daily basis but this isn’t those places. We have (or had) a temperate climate but now seem to be steadily moving towards a warm Mediterranean climate. |

Here in San Francisco and the northern Cal. coastal area we have quite cool temps in summer and the marine layer (fog) to maintain it (to quote Mark Twain" The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco"), but twenty miles east it changes dramatically.
Southern England is looking oddly like that of twenty miles or more east of us. Is it very dry heat, such as ours, or humid in England? CB

Humid heat most commonly in and around London where I am but what we experienced Monday and Tuesday felt very dry. It reminded me of Las Vegas. Much more humid today and tonight though and a 10*C decrease in temp to a positively chilly 28!

Humidity is worst of it. A temperature of roughly 90F in dry heat is quite comfortable; otherwise miserable.

That said, I am not underplaying the severity of this week's unprecedented weather; Luke makes a good point, we are not Dubai, or Australia, or Nevada. You cannot compare apples with oranges. Sad to see the problems in Ukraine and covid relegated to last places in the news if they even get a mention.Such issues just become the norm while we are inconvenienced by the weather.

Very true, children being bombed and slaughtered by the World's biggest nut-job since Adolf and we sit here moaning about the weather. Covid still rampant but the heat takes priority. My biggest problem at the moment is getting my ice-cold pint of Guinness down my throat before it gets warm.
