Victorian Shooting badge
Hello,
As a collector of Prize badges this one has me stumped. At first glance it appears to be a type of the early Volunteer Shooting badge with the addition of a single star for Best Marksman at 350 to 600 yards. However closer examination reveals the following differences:- 1. Facing the wrong direction 2. No sling 3. Large star. 4. Very unusual colours of Light Blue on a purpley grey backing So can anyone ID it please from its style or colours. regards

The design of the Rifle is similar to the old Cadet badges.

Marc,
Yes I have just compared it and it is similar indeed. That series of badges DO face left also but have 5 pointed stars, so again some differences. The rear construction of mine would make me believe it is a Victorian badge, BUT, possibly a Cadet link? regards I think the colour combo will assist in ID'ing it. regards

The purple - grey backing, could there be a link to the London Scottish with their Hodden Grey tartan?

Very handsome thing, do you think when looking at the badge, it's colours may have altered a little through the passage of time, just from the photograph, much more difficult to tell, but, I dare say easier when you have the badge in your hand, or, are they still really vivid?

London Scottish is a good call.
Colours are accurate, because I can see same by careful inspection of the rear. regards

I was disappointed some time ago not to win the badge in the attached photo which I think has a connection with West Lancashire Cadets.

A nice badge, and yet another I'd never seen before.

I think the colours are potentially very telling indeed, but, if I were a betting man and if there was no question, whatsoever, of a cadet link, my money would be on the plastron tunic of the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry, or, perhaps even the same, of the City of London Yeomanry.
Still a really unusual find these days which I like very much. Quote:

Frank,
I like those two suggestions and the colour combos. I am not convinced its anything to do with Cadets but certainly similar, somewhere between the Victorian Volunteer Badge and the much later Cadet shooting badges. regards

Hi all,
I came across this one:

I am always looking early (pre 1939) British ribbon bars with foreign awards; interesting devices or just different construction solutions. Also I am seeking Royal Dublin Fusiliers items. I can help in small scale to research RDF soldiers (MICs, medal rolls, additional information, etc). |

That is a bit of a "Frankenstein" made up of a Cadet Force "Second Class Shot Badge for the .22 Rifle" with a Red "Cert A Part II" Qualification star attached. The Cert A was discontinued circa 1973/74 so it could date from any time before then.
