The badge embroidered on a green backing was the beret badge, on a black backing the forage cap badge.
I have three Devon & Dorset officer's forage caps, I'm not sure if they have that "shaped backing.

Thanks Leigh
I picked them in a lot along with a KORB bullion badge, all 3 are new and the KOEB and D&D on green are sealed in the makers bags.

I'm an ex Gloster and the D&D were in the same Div as us. A good bunch. We actually served side-by-side in Berlin. Nice to see the old badges again. Thanks for sharing.

Nice to get them still sealed in their bags. There are different patterns of the Devon and Dorset officer's bullion badges, as explained to me here:

The badges on the three Devon & Dorset officer's forage caps that I have, the first is on a GD Golding cap, the second is on a Herbert and Johnson and the third on a cap of unknown manufacture.

Thanks again Leigh seems like mine is a variation of how the forage cap badge backing was cut and the shape is similar to yours in the first and second photos.

The D&D officers' embroidered badge I bought for a friend commissioned into the regiment, from Herbert Johnson, was square backed.

Yes, the beret badge was square/rectangular, two of the black backed versions I have sewn to forage caps are "shaped", one is square.
"British Army Badges" by Lt Col R Hodges published 2005, shows the green backed as square, the black backed as shaped.

Default Devon & Dorset Officer's Cap Badge

I recently came across a gilt and silver plated Devon & Dorset officer's metal cap badge (2 lugs). Anyone know when the D&D moved to using bullion wire badges on the forage cap?
