Hello Brian,
He does look smart, does this sort of thing still take place these days?
Regards Frank

Yes, now and again. I do know that in the "one province that still runs with some integrity " (Cape Province) they have an annual Tattoo at the Old Cape Town Castle, which appears to be well represented with many of the Cape Regiments. Durban used to have one on a regular basis but that appears to have died a slow death ...not sure when the last one was held here. I used to get complimentary tickets as my better half worked as a secretary to a few of the top officers at Natal Command, this was in the 1990's.

Never forget the last one we attended the Durban Mayor who was sitting a few chairs away from us slept for much of the display....what can one say?

Hello Brian,
Well I really don't know what to say, perhaps he simply had a very late night out previously?
Do the Light Horse still dress like that, I like the regimental plume.

I really do not know much about the Joburg regiments but seriously doubt it. Yes, the plume is nice and scarce these days, acquired one awhile back, thought at the time it was the ILH/KR hackle from WW2, but discovered later that it was the ILH helmet plume, still looking for the WW2 hackle.

Here is an officer group c.1915. Note some appear to be wearing Drab Service Dress with cuff-style ranks while others seem to be wearing Khaki Drill with rank on the shoulder straps.

Subtle changes in detail as seen from O/C photographs.

fltr:

Lt-Col Gedye c.1942, SD cap, Crown, Bath Star and ILH titles on shoulder strap.

Comdt Hyslop OC 1953-59, Black Beret, Green and Gold cloth 'balkie' on beret. Crown, 5-pointed Star insignia on shoulder.

Comdt. Drysdale, last OC ILH, c.1961, as above but with Castle, 5-pt star and ILH title on shoulder, SA titles on collar
