A car badge, commercially produced, attaches to the bumper / fender or a bar fitted to the front.

Most were made by J.R.GAUNT using chrome plated cap badges usually fitted with two threaded bolts fixed onto enameled plates in regimental or corps colours. Your example is maker marked where the plate fits onto a bar or car bumper.

I forgot to add - although the badge "says" 16th
The Queen's Lancers" by the time this was made the regiment was 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers but using the cap badge of the 16th following amalgamation.
