Hi Jerry,

This might be interesting.

The Royal Engineers badges - can you confirm mark of:

W DOWLER B'HAM

or is it:

WM DOWLER. (B’HAM)

Note the extra 'M', full stop and brackets.

Regards

Chris
Unfortunetly I cannot confirm this mark. A few years back I had a collection of approx 20 Royal Engineer anodised badges but these went missing when a "friend" was flat sitting for me,(not seen the friend for years either)
I had listed the makers names and Dowler was one of them. So all I have is my list of makers and a picture of the front of the badges and that is that .
So sorry....
Jerry.

Hi Alan,

Taking this one step further.

See the attached 800 dpi scan of the obverse side of the badge.

At the bottom of the inner loop circle below and just to the left of where the bottom of the 'E' touches the 'R' there is a small dent about 1mm long.

This could be due to damage after manufacture or it could be a die flaw.

Does your badge have this mark?

I have also sent a 1200 dpi to show the mark in close up.

Regards

Chris

Do you mean the mark separating the E from the R, so that the letters do not run into each other?

Hi 54 Bty,

Nope - on the inner ring of the scroll below the ER and just to the left of centre. Have a look at the close up image and you will see it running from south west to north east.

Chris

Thanks Alan,

Looking at the larger photo of the obverse, are there any characteristics between my badge and yours that possibly show that they came from the same die.

Conversely and just as important are there characteristics that show differences that would imply that they came from totally different dies?

Are you able to post a scan of your badge? The problem with photos is that they probably will not show the detail that I'm looking for.

Regards

Chris

Ah, different badge - I'll update the entry on post #1 later.

Still looking for the answer to those 'Dowler' lugs.
