"MLS" makers mark?
Hi all
I've come across the makers mark "MLS" on a number of WW1 Brodie helmets, but after googling and searching the net, I've come up empty. Anyone know what maker this might be? Thanks Colin

Is this common - a manufacturer on, what seems to be, quite a large scale, remaining unknown? Wouldn't there be records of orders or deliveries? Cheers Colin

Hello Colin. We are lucky to know the ones we do- Marcus Cotton published his research only in 1990's. Often its easy in these days of the net to think all information should be easy to find but it still takes someone to do the hard graft of research. FKS is also not definitely the same as FS I think, but still a common mark. Regards, Paul.

You're right of course; it's easy in this google-age to assume all information is available somewhere, and forget the leg-work needed to lay the basis for this information. When I was studying Medieval History in Oslo, my professor kept nagging me to do some post-grad work to help compile a bibliography of Norse texts with cross references, etc. At the time it struck me as somewhat tedious, but I'm beginning to appreciate the work that's done "behind the scenes" to make such info readily available. I guess there were myriad manufacturers contracted and sub-contracted to produce war material such as helmets, so we might never discover who was behind the elusive "MLS" stamp. Cheers Colin
