Still investigating the 8threcce badges. Ed and Phil, are yours aluminum or white metal? Cheers Brian

Brian,

It is a fairly solid white metal.
Do you know if there is any indication that the different badges appeared at certain times?

Phil

It is a mystery. Contacted a buddy of mine; his came from an 8th recce member and it is aluminum.
"I'm wondering if the leafs (the aluminum) were given a silver wash as part of their manufacturing process. Aluminum is extremely hard to solder without first applying a solderable coating such as silver. Second, the backs of all these badges I've seen all exhibit the same silver like tarnishing."
The fellow I contacted from the 8th recce just said they were a dull metal with the brass overlay. It looks to me to be aluminum and white metal used maybe differing time periods. Cheers Brian

As a footnote, Vernon's Collectables realized the asking price for his 8 Recce example on ebay. I believe it was $550 US.

Default 8th Recce

Gentlemen,

As someone who knows a little about British badges and nothing about Canadian ones I've found this thread interesting. Would I be correct in thinking that this design of badge has been re-struck post-war, like so many others?

Thanks, Stephen.

Yes they did make a copy for one of the 8th Recce association reunion, in the mid 80's if I'm not mistaken. You could go to the Scully office in Montreal and buy whatever badges they had as surplus, for as low as $5.00.
Here's the copy made by Scully. The back was flat and had Scully/Montreal imprinted in the metal. Also, the lugs were white metal and unlike anything seen before.

Default 8th Recce

Thanks Jo.

Somewhere in the loft I have a box of Canadian insignia. It was put away out of temptation so that I stayed on track collecting British items: I'm feeling the need to get it out and actually identify what I have. Sadly, I don't think there was one of these up there!

Regards, Stephen.

Default Unknown 8th Recce Badge

VIII Recce 2nd badge_01 (640x479) (300x225).jpg

VIII Recce 2nd Badge_02 (640x479) (300x225).jpgI have 2 different versions of the VII Recce cap badge. One is like the ones shown in pictures on this thread, with the gold "VIII" and the Gold "Recce" separated by a silver area, and the gold bits appear to be attached to the badge with a crimped "pin."

The 2nd one has the entire "VIII RECCE" area in gold and you can see the pattern from the back. Her's 2 pictures of the 2nd one. Can anyone in this forum tell me anything about it?

Default VIII Recce Images

Would the members who posted the images give their permission to have the images captured and posted in the "Canadian post 1920" project. Presently, the only VIII Recce image is the "CANADA" badge type.
These are very good images and will be worthwhile for the reference of our fellow collectors

Thanks

Larry
