Herd of elephants (19th Hussars)
I've trawled through previous threads and they are somewhat fragmented, and confusing. I've seen enough to make me doubt any of my herd are worth keeping (apart from as specimens of design). Does anyone have anything to add please?
Stephen.

Your double scroll is an early fantasy badge that first seems to have appeared in the hands of John Gaylor and was pictured in his 1969 book.
The Nelly’s at 11 and 5 o’clock look ok to me. Sharp voiding between tusks, tail and forelegs, loops in correct position. The badge at 7 o’clock is IMO a fake, has poor voiding and appears very dark on the back like it’s been chemically aged. |

Herd of elephants (15 Hussars)
Do you mean 19th Hussars, or are you referring to the number of badges a particular dealer had made? |

Yes very interesting. A supposed Edwardian badge with a post WW2 maker mark stamped on the slider. Unless I’m very much mistaken that’s the fake from Peter Taylor’s website.
Hope no one on here bought it. There is a photo on the forum somewhere showing what badge the 19th Hussars wore on the pagri circa Boer war... it certainly looks nothing like these fantasy double scroll badges. Indeed Frank. The rest of the story is that magically these abominable Nellys seem to have appeared in a herd so naturally he passed his good fortune on to fellow collectors, for a price. Makes you think...

In this case from 1902 upto 1910 (when this badge is incorrectly dated to) the 19th H were in Ireland and then England. The ORs were wearing the badgeless pill box hat and then the peaked cap. It cannot be ruled out but there are no photos of the Brodrick in use by the 19H. It was the peaked cap that is seen with the Danneborg Cross badge on. This is seen on khaki caps on at least one photo dated to 1907. Either way such a long slider is incorrect for either the pill box or a peaked cap. Last edited by Alan O; 13-03-19 at 01:22 PM. |
