London Electrical Engineers
These photos, copied from originals in the Institution of Electrical Engineers nearly 40 years ago, show some detail of this Volunteer Unit formed in London in 1896.
The first one shows the unit at camp at Weymouth in 1905 dressed in what must be working uniform complete with naval-style caps and "Electrical Engineers RE" cap ribbons. The second image taken the previous year on the Isle of Wight shows the searchlight arm badge and the Volunteer Special Service Sections arm badge. In the Pimlico Register in September 1902 it describes two version- drab for SD and scarlet cloth for tunics and frocks. An image of the scarlet version is attached but I have never seen a drab version. Has anyone got a drab example - or a cap ribbon they would be willing to share? Jon |

Jon,
Thanks for posting these. I have not got the SS badge in any cloth, just metal. I think Mark Holden has shown some of these before? He possibly has one. I have never seen the searchlight badge before and didnt know of its existence, a rare badge for sure. Is it mentioned in any Vol. Regs. or the like? regards

Thank you for sharing these Jon.
I've never seen the Navy style caps before, fascinating! And the searchlight badge is great, and good to see a photo of it being worn. Chris |

This is a Repro of the Royal Engineers Submarine miners cap tally (I believe).
Would the London Electrical Engineers have worn something similar ?? Jerry

Andrew Bain EE(RE) Vols
Interesting to see you found those in the IEE archives. I asked them some years ago if they had anything on Hon Col Andrew Bain (RE London Signal Companies), Lt Col London District Telegraph Companies RE; Captain EE RE (V) attached Search Light Detachment during the South African War.
I received some photos of searchlights and a silver presenttaion searchlight. I don't suppose you have a photo pf the man himself?
