I thought the RND battalions were named not numbered so there would only have needed to be a numeral if the title was RND surely.

That's more or less what I said , if for example, the !st battalion of the !st Brigade was the Drake battalion why would it need a number over it unless it was 1/RND?

I understand that the titles where issued with numbers, but as the R.N.D where after all Navy they often didn't use the number in an effort to resist being brought into line with the Army.

Nice Peter. I have seen a picture of this before somewhere, and think it was attributed as a "one off" made by a POW??

RND Title
I'll play the Devil's Advocate: how do we know the title and plate belong together and haven't been married up later in their lives? If the plate had been added later there would be no reason to enquire if a numeral was missing?
Somewhere in my mind I thought that the plates for multi part badges were only introduced between the world wars. Stephen. |

Found it Peter - on the link below. Attributed to the "Ian Wardell Collection"
http://freespace.virgin.net/jack.clegg/RND.htm A good summary of the various battalions and numbers as well Badjez, there is evidence that multi part plates were made in late 1914/early 1915. Tyneside Scottish titles are one example. I hear you though.... Cheers, Neil |
