CEF 176 Battalion cap badge, real or fake??
I bought this cap badge for my own collection a little while back.
After looking at it for a bid I had a fear that it is a repro for some reason, I might be just overly paranoid but the badge seems light to me and the lugs looking different (specifically how they attach to the badge) than any I am familiar with. Could any one give me their opinion on this cap badge, thank you. |

This badge looks pretty good to me, Hemsley style lugs and pickled brass line up with what you would expect. I have dealt with many CEF badges and you can count on not every lug being braized/soldered in the same way, sometimes they are tight and seemless and on others that are the same manufacturer they are sloppy. I see some verdigris present as well, I don't believe that is very easy to fake. I would be comfortable with that badge.

Thank you very much Jim, very much appreciated. I have just handled enough to be sure.
I will add it to my collection as originally planned. |

Hi Ron, as noted, there isn't any red flags on this badge. The details are sharp/crisp, and as Jim notes it is near impossible to fake verdigris. (Unless someone was willing to hold copies long enough for the rot to develop.)

Thanks Mike, I also think it is a beautiful badge, some great art work in those CEF badges. |
