South African Light Horse
Hi All,
Here is a recent find I'd like to share. Hard to see, but scratched on the rear is "L F" at top, then "Leopold Frank". I believe this slouch hat badge belonged to 2503 Trooper Frank, L. Time Expired 4/11/01 File#493, these details found on a South African War website. I'm particularly pleased to have this badge as my father had one similar but swapped it at some stage when he was collecting. Any other information concerning Trooper Leopold Frank would be gratefully received. Thanks, Tinto Last edited by Tinto; 20-09-13 at 12:05 AM. |

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your comments. I should have mentioned that the central "1899" is on a raised disc. Regards, John |

Good morning,
According to WO127 Leopold Frank was discharged time expired from the SALH on the 4th of November 1901, he recieved the QSA and clasps for the Cape Colony and Orange Free State, issued on the 19th of May 1903 and is also entited to the South Africa 1901 clasp as shown on WO100/275 page 99, his medal and clasps having been issued from WO100/274 page 44, name shown as Franks on this latter. His address appears to have been number 5 Buckley Road, Kilburn, London, in addition, you might find his original attestation and Discharge paper in WO126/130-138 at Kew. Kind regards Frank Kelley Quote:

Hi Frank,
Thank you very much for the valuable information, especially that Leopold Frank was a Londoner, possibly the one born in March qtr. 1875, London City (as found on FreeBMD website). It's interesting to reflect that a lot of the South African Light Horsemen were from other parts of the world, not just South African. All the best, Tinto |

Hello,
Yes, the SAMIF was a multi national force made up from volunteers across the empire and in a surprising number of cases, beyond the pink bits of the map too. My daughter visited Churchill's war rooms in Westminster today.
Sent me this image she took on the visit. May be of interest. Tony.

Thanks for sharing the pictures Tony.
I presume this was Winston's own slouch hat? Regards, John |

Seems like there was some backing behind the badge originally..
