Nice photograph, Last time I received a rum ration was standing in a line at the helipad at Bessbrook in South Armagh in 1982 before going out on patrol. Same big earthenware jug was used and we had to sign a register and were then presented with a big cook house spoonfull of rum which went down in one.
Imagine the issue of rum is long gone in these modern days. Simon. |

I remember gunfire being brought to Billet on regimental days by SNCO’s .
Thought i would help myself to a drink but Rum Jar has been empty for at least 100 Years I brought it back from Flanders. Regards Stephen |

Edinburgh Tattoo 1980 the band ( KOSB Pipes and Drums)was given a bottle of rum( in a Grouse Whisky bottle) after a rain soaked performance.
Probably came from Rosyth. It all went. |

Rum is still available according to Materiel Regulations, but the circumstances of its issue have changed. There are no stocks in the supply chain so it's to be procured by local purchase with three individual signatures required. The RMO has to sign it off as ‘inclement conditions’ (for it to be at public expense), the CO has to countersign the expenditure (to avoid fraud) and the QM has to account for it, and the associated vouchers (to ensure an audit trail).

Remember Bairnsfather's cartoon called "The Thirst for Reprisals" when German shellfire broke the rum jar?

Those men in the opening post would appear to be members of the Chinese Labour Corps so I've no doubt they earned their rum ration.
