24th Manchester Regiment, Oldham
I bought these two badges at a local auction last night in what appeared to be a house clearance lot which included a few other items.
My first thoughts are that these two badges are in too new a condition to be original. With the cap badge, the lugs are in the right position, but I would have expected a bronzed or chocolate finish to the badge. The shoulder title has the correct lugs but again appears to be too new. Are these original and remarkably well preserved badges or are they modern fakes. Please note that the photograph of the rear of the cap badge is slightly out of focus. |

You did well.
Both are 100% original. The shoulder title is as new as it was issued over a hundred years ago. the cap badge has had the bronzing polished off, which is not unusual. regards

Simon,
absolutely chuffed to bits. The badge is identical to my other, broken, example that has a bronzed finish. I was thrown by the superb condition of these two badges. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=140649 Many thanks, Simon. |

I think both are superb, but, in the case of the cap badge, I think it is actually rather well worn and certainly not too new or well preserved in any way at all, notwithstanding, a very nice example.

Frank,
you are indeed right about the cap badge. In my excitement about finding these two badges in a little country auction I was confused by how polished the brass was, as my only other example of this badge is a dark chocolate brown colour. On closer examination there are traces of chocolate brown on the cap badge. Simon |

Very very nice. Wish I could get hold of something like that.

They certainly are "very, very nice" indeed and posted in the wrong section of this forum.

Indeed they are but only because I could not believe that they were genuine when I bought them.
