Default Royal Indian Marine cap badge

Hi,
I brought this with the hope that it is pre 1934 Royal Indian Marine?
But now I do wonder. Maybe an CPO or PO badge?
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks
Barry

Default Royal Indian Marine cap badge

This is certainly not an RIM officers cap badge (I have attached three images for comparison).

The problem is that although there is a lot of information on officers insignia there is very little on the insignia worn by Indian ratings prior to 1934.

It is therefore possible that this is a POs or CPOs cap badge. How does it compare in size to a more modern POs or CPOs cap badge?

Pete

Default Royal Indian Marine collection

I have been checking through my records and I can't find a single image or any information on pre-1934 Indian naval ratings insignia. Plenty after 1934 when the RIM became the RIN (Royal Indian Navy) but none before. Of course in 1934 the RIN adopted Royal Navy insignia and badges, so that doesn't really help.

I have some books from the 1920s which include information on the navies of the Dominions and colonies. I'll check in those later but I seem to recall that they mainly feature images of ships rather than personnel.

It is very hard to find Indian ratings badges in the UK, unlike Indian naval officers insignia which turn up fairly regularly. I guess that is because , until 1923, all Indian naval officers were British and when they retired or left the service they brought their uniforms home with them. Officers buttons from all periods are quite common but I was lucky to pick up some Indian ratings buttons a couple of years ago. They feature the same design as the officers buttons but without the rope edge, etc. Mine are fairly crudely made and were most probably produced in India during the Second World War.

One final thought about your badge. Since it has a purple background to the anchor it is probably connected with engineering in some way.

I'll let you know if I find any further information.

Pete

Hi Pete,
Thank you for your thoughts.
I don't know how it turned up here in NZ but it was with some other naval and MN items from the WW2 or earlier period.

I agree not RIM officers and yes purple for engineer.
The eight pointed star was also used on some Irish badges but I don't know if they had a separate navy or separate naval badges.

I will post images when the badge is in hand.

Thanks again.

Certainly not Irish.

Inclined to go with engineering rating, PO or CPO, of the RIM.

Look forward to seeing other pics and for confirmation of size.

Here is the badge in comparison.
I am happy to think that it is a pre-1934 CPO/PO engineer of Royal Indian Marine cap badge.
Not in my sphere of collecting but I am happy to have brought it out of the shadows.
I have emailed two Indian museums but I don't hold out much hope.
PM or email me if interested in swap or buy.
Pete can have first refusal.
