Question RAF CHAPLAIN COLLAR OR BREAST BADGES?

Hello,
Does anyone know what is the purpose of these RAF Chaplain badges?
Their size is about 56mm, one with 2 lugs and other with a long pin.
Any picture showing how they were worn will be welcomed...
Thanks J-F

Was at an RAF station last week and met an RAF Chaplain wearing the pin back pattern badge in an RAF officers peaked hat.

Perhaps the lugged pattern is for wear in a sidehat ?

Salut J-F, here's something to show the way the badge is worn.
Jo

Hon/Air Vice-Marshal Hewitt Wilson,84 (d 22/07/09)served as RAF Chaplain-in-Chief for 7 years.

The RAF Chaplains Badge is found with 3 different fittings:
1. Blades for the cap badge - this went out on 1 Jan 93 when they took to wearing the normal Officer cap badge.
2. Lugs for the collar badges - still worn
2. Brooch pin for pullover/shirt-sleeve order, usually worn on left breast. This is also worn on the black Scarf (NOT Stole) by Civilian Clerics who minister on RAF Stations. A Stole is a completely different bit of vesture.

The badge for the scarf is usually embroidered directly to the material for full commissioned chaplains in the RAF, with the crown above. As Revdougal points out the civilian clerics acting as ministers not actually RAF commissioned have a pin on one.
There is also a Jewish variant with the star of david instead of the cross.
Incidentally in the last linked picture from the above post, am I right in thinking that the red cassock indicates he is not just an ex RAF chaplain, but also a former honorary chaplain to the queen? I may be getting confused though. I'm hoping Revdougal will be able to put me right!

Another photograph this time of Squadron Leader (Chaplain) James Gordon Brown RCAF, KIA 27/11/44 Aged 35.
http://www.jackiefreemanphotography....rdon_brown.gif

On November 27, 1944, he was celebrating his birthday with a group of friends in Antwerp when a V-2 bomb landed near them. He was killed, but the others were untouched. He is buried in Schoonselhof Cemetery, Antwerp.

The Bishop in "full togs" is wearing Rochet and Chimere, as well as his Scarf, showing that he was a Chaplain RAF. From his CV he was not in Bishops's Orders as a serving Chaplain. He is wearing the correct dress for a Bishop, known in Anglican circles as Convocation Dress/Choir Habit: ie not dressed for a Sacrament. The Chimere is a sleeveless coat (?derived from a tabard?), and is in either Red or Black. The Lords Spiritual tend to wear the latter in the House.
There is no connection with being a Queen's Chaplain; if there were, he would be wearing a Red Cassock as opposed to a (Bp's) purple one. Also if a Q's Chaplain there would be the appropriate badge on the Scarf.
The Rochet is a white, linen billowy garment which is held at the wrists - again usually only seen on Anglican Bishops.

A superb and very comprehensive answer - I stand educated! I should have known from the missing QHC badge on the scarf, then I wouldn't have even needed to ask. But then, I wouldn't have learned anything more. Many thanks.
