The quality of their workmanship, was, generally speaking, always good and it is very important to remember that this particular company not only made the original officers badge for the Royal Air Force, but, had actually patented it's original design too, whilst not being the sole manufacturer for those few months, because of the number required, those particular badges were also of very high quality with gilded metal crowns and wreaths.

In my opinion its a period piece probably produced by Gaunt as a sample for the Air Ministry. Plus, I've not seen any others. I would not become too distracted by the "By Appointment" issue.
