There were effectively three types of economy badges. One full economy has all metal parts with gilding to the Crown, eagle and wreath. You can also find examples with metal crown and eagle but bullion wreath, and metal eagle and wreath but a bullion crown. I've seen one example of all bullion including the Eagle but I think this was a theatre made item.

The quality of their workmanship, was, generally speaking, always good and it is very important to remember that this particular company not only made the original officers badge for the Royal Air Force, but, had actually patented it's original design too, whilst not being the sole manufacturer for those few months, because of the number required, those particular badges were also of very high quality with gilded metal crowns and wreaths.

I don't believe that your badge is a "dud" repro. or anything like that. The workmanship looks to be excellent. In my opinion its a period piece probably produced by Gaunt as a sample for the Air Ministry. Plus, I've not seen any others. I would not become too distracted by the "By Appointment" issue.
