Lanarkshire Imperial Yeomanry
What do members think of the linked Lanarkshire Imperial Yeomanry badge on eBay. This particular strike does come up from time to time on eBay, but I've never been convinced.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353822056...QAAOSwKq5hwkPc Martin Marsh did sell a fake later period Lanarkshire Yeomanry badge (shown below) and though I cannot see the Imperial one in any of his catalogues it does have the same(ish) sort of feel to me. Any thoughts? Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 23-12-21 at 04:50 PM. |

.... the "chiselled" lettering gives me comfort.

The one on Paul's site is die cast as many OSD badges are, rather than die struck and different from the Marsh you show. Although I am not familiar with this particular badge, it does not say fake to me.

Thanks Griff and CB for your feedback and positive opinions. I take onboard your comments and will have to revise my opinion.
Unfortunately with it being such a small badge (1 3/8") and only having the image in KK as reference I have perhaps been too hesitant when looking for one in the past. I do have to admit on reflection that this one does appear to be a better fit with image 1323 in KK than most I have seen. Unfortunately for me it's out of my price league, but now I know what to look for. Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 23-12-21 at 08:50 PM. |

There are a great many more sources of reproductions out there besides Marsh. Some stretching back much further in time.
I would pay close attention to the surface of the lettering of this example, and the fact the (viewers) right hand eagle has only a partial head. Also compare the badge to the other ranks GM strikes regards overall quality and intricacy of the voiding around the thistle wreath. The other ranks is far superior in both respects which strikes me as a bit unusual. |

Thanks for the input. I perhaps should have said that I only mentioned Marsh because I thought I remembered seeing the Imperial badge in one of the Marsh catalogues that you kindly reproduced in the Album section. Unfortunately that memory turned out to be false. I wasn't implying that he was the only source of badge fakes, but of course he (and Morigi) did stock a later Lanarkshire Yeomanry fake and other double headed eagles, which is what probably coloured my memory. Do you have any photographs of an OR's Imperial badge that you can share for comparison. I may be missing an illustrative thread, but I've only been able to find an image of the reverse unfortunately Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 23-12-21 at 11:30 PM. |

Ahhh just found the thread with a good photo. I trust the poster won't mind me reproducing it again.

Of course. The fine voids to the wreath are probably more evident in my picture of the reverse. Merry Christmas to you Mark.

Thanks Luke, the rear image does illustrate the voids nicely. I also see from the rear that the stamping has a narrow lip around the perimeter. Putting my neck out I seem to recall we may have discussed this before and that it's often a feature on some Firmin badges, though not always exclusive to them and therefore not entirely definitive.
Anyway a nice illustrative example of what to look for, thank you for showing it and all the best for 2022. Mark |
