Hi, they're much the same size as the British and Canadian ammo. col. In fact it is very hard to tell them apart. As a general rule, the Australian badges are on a better quality badge cloth. The same applied to their uniforms. The Australian cloth was far superior to the British produced Australian uniforms. Mike

Thanks Mike. I think there has been some confusion between Canadian and Australian battle patches over the years. Especially the ones like the artillery one.

Hi Fearnuaght is there a story behind this collection? How it came to be assembled?

That is a very valuable lot.

Hi, they belong to a friend who is mad about WW1 Australian and was very dedicated and knew the right people at the right time. And that is not a pun on Mr. Wright. It broke my heart to give him the Amoured motor battery flash but it looks good in his collection. Mike

Mike,

Just spotted this, very impressed indeed.

I particularly like the LG & MG patches. I've never seen either one without the wreath.

Does anyone know if the MG patch is the type authorised (ANZ Circular Memorandum No.17 of 25 Feb 16) prior to the intro of the Crossed Guns (AIF Order 222 of 23 Aug 16) for MG Companies and later MG Battalions? I always thought the standard 'wreathed' type was used for the company machine gunners, it being too difficult for the authority to illustrate a 'wreath'. I know Clyde's work on patches shows the above type patch but again I thought he was taking the authority too literally.

Also, does anyone know about the LG patch (minus wreath) and if there is an authority?

Has anyone seen photographic of either of these type of 'unwreather' patches in use?

Thank you very much for these pics - two I've never seen before

Dan

Hi,

My friend tells me that the "MG" and "LG", clearly without the accompanying wreaths because of the amount of surrounding background cloth, are both the Territorial Army (TA) equivalent of the Regular Army's Macine Gunner and Lewis Gunner qualification/proficiency badges. They are both 1921/1924 period items, respectively. Well spotted - they will be replaced by the wreathed variants ...
