"Why Did I Buy It / Steal It, Keep It?"
We must all have things we come across every now and then that make us wonder why on earth we have them.
Recent "finds" amongst the detritus of my extravagant youthful expenditure, hadn't seen them for 40-odd years. The bullet cigarette lighter, slightly longer than a 7.62 round, presumably so that you couldn't shove it in a SLR magazine by mistake. The NAAFI shop in Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry sold them for £1 a time, I think it was, back around 1974. I bought at least four, probably more like six of them due to losses. I've never smoked, presumably I thought I'd win girls over by lighting their cigarettes with a fake bullet. The grenade cigarette lighter picked up in Nicosia in 1978, I thought at the time that it was a ridiculously ugly piece of cheap kitsch tat and still bought it ("Kitchen" must be derived from "kitsch". Presumably I'd realised that my fake bullet lighters weren't making any headway with the girls so I'd gone for a fag lighter that was hefty enough to befuddle their judgement if I threw it at them. |

Very classy Leigh! For some reason I was once given a leather hand grenade shaped purse by a relative who found it in a Greek tourist shop and thought I'd like it as I was in the Army! Afraid I can't show a photograph as it went straight into file 13!

Ah yes, I remember seeing leather grenade purses a few years ago on t'interweb - amazingly, I resisted any urge to purchase.
I used to use this for carrying statement forms etc in. |

When i first joined the RE TA I was really impressed by the Royal Mons Militia RE badge (For some reason). And i nicked one out of a hat in the Sgts Mess (guilty secret)
Later in the regs i was in the Garrison Sgt's mess in Aldershot, when i noticed a N01 Hat collection above the door. The RAOC hat had no badge in it so i brought a new one and put it in. So i recon i kinda made up for the crime 20 years later |

The cartridge case looks to be a .30-06 from the picture.

It's identical to a 7.62 mm other than being a couple of mm longer, not long enough to be a 30.06?

Probably where the case has been cut loosing a couple of mm, the neck does from the picture look a 30-06 to me anyway.

It's not a real case or bullet as I recall.
I've got a couple of "spare" upper halves knocking around too, I was in the habit of losing the actual lighter sections by the look of it - money well wasted but it could've been worse, I could've bought more of those grenades. |

I was never a member of The British Association of Women Police Officers but the thing was handy for paperwork.
Something else that sits around in loft or garage. |

Cape Stiffener and 3/5 Grain measurer
A couple of random bits I've held on to.
The top item is some form of fibreboard/heavy duty cardboard, labelled "Cape Stiffener", and measures 27.8 x 3cm, and is about 1.5mm thick. As I recall I found it at my last posting in the RAF. Many years ago whilst working in a museum I salvaged the brass strip from a broken box in a pile of rubbish. It is stamped with the crow's foot and MAW London, the top is marked "3 Grain" and graduated 1, 6, 12, 18, 24, & 30; the bottom reads "5 Grain" and graduated 1, 6, 12, 18, & 24. It is 19.8 x 1.1cm, and 1mm thick. Any ideas regarding the purposes of either? Graham

Not an igloo really - is the brass strip to do with gunpowder, explosive charges, morphine?
The Cape stiffener - a lining for the collar? |
