SHAPE patch
In 1952, Canadian personnel attached to SHAPE were authorized to wear the SHAPE patch. In 1952, which patch was this? Was it the same as the SHAEF patch? Or, the later pattern with the crossed swords?

Hi Bill,
SHAEF -black background; SHAPE - blue background, otherwise the same. Don

Thanks Don. Do you know when they changed the colour? At the time NATO was formed?

SHAPE
Hi Bill,
There was a discussion of this patch a while ago here. SHAEF went out of business in late 1945. I forget when NATO came into existence but I think the patch came first. I am not familiar with a crossed swords patch. Don

Ok Jo / Don
but this is where my question comes from. The other thread was SHAEF. This is SHAPE, and the order in the Canadian files said that Canadian personnel were approved the pattern that was approved for use by SHAPE. The other thread is essentially about SHAEF.

Bill,
I've just posted a query on another forum asking about the history of the green patch w/crossed swords. The blue patch w/vertical sword was also US Army Europe which existed pre NATO, so good question. I don't know when the green patch was adopted. One source I've read stated that Ike had input in the design so, if true, the green patch may have been around for awhile. Stay tuned for further details, I hope. Don

Thanks Don. That clarifies the situation. It must be the SHAEF type patch that was worn, but as you indicated the colour changed post war? And, would the patches be melton embroidered pattern or the fully embroidered American style? (I think I can answer this myself, probably both were made and used. And I have in my accumulation a bullion wire pattern that reportedly came from a Canadian officer's tunic.)

A couple of examples - the leather `Fob` style although European in design this example was worn by an RAF officer serving with this organisation .
Hope these were of interest .

Thanks Nemo. That is the 1960 patch from what Don has researched.
