No ! the first 1939 officer's was indeed cast but by 1964 the most common version was die struck by Gaunt (it only lasted up to 1967 - even with the KC!)
Here are the different versions 1939 - 1967 (with an optimistic gap for the HMS version!!!!!) Officers’ Caubeen badges 1939-67, (harps with 8 strings). The elephant badge - a pouch badge of the Highland Light Infantry?
1st Punjab's wore an elephant over ASSAYE tablet badge, it could be connected with them. I don't know if it's genuine or not. |

Thank you Julian for that as ever concise answer. I am still perplexed why a 1964 period badge has a Kings crown?

The badge with lugs is pre 1922. Note the change in the regiments name on the scrolls of the badge introduced in 1939.
I have never seen a picture where I could identify a die struck white metal cap badge being worn and in my opinion these badges are spurious. If they were worn by officers there would have been hundreds of officers in the battalion if the number of those badges on eBay is anything to go. P.

[QUOTE=leigh kitchen;523224]The elephant badge - a pouch badge of the Highland Light Infantry?
1st Punjab's wore an elephant over ASSAYE tablet badge, it could be connected with them. I don't know if it's genuine or not.[/QUOTE I rather don't think it is HLI related; they did not have pouch badges to my knowledge. There were several Indian regiments that wore the elephant with Assaye honor. That said, I am not sure of it either. The top lug appears to have the infamous spade like feet seen on fakes, and the patina looks a bit forced. An oblique photo of the lugs might help? PS update....this badge is a phony baloney. There are several elephant badges being flogged on epay and this is one of them, purporting to be a 78th forage cap badge. CB
