Didn't Staff Sergeant Major 1st Class in the RASC wear it?

When the badge was created in 1918 it was for Conductors AOC, Staff Sgt Majors 1st Class ASC and Master Gunners 1st Class RA. regards

Some ATS girls wore the cannon badge above their left breast pocket if attached to an RA AA battery. They wore it in cloth on service dress and in metal on formal dress. If they were reassigned to a non RA unit they were no longer allowed to wear the badge.

Marc, According to the "ATS Badge and Insignia 1939-1945" article by Martin Brayley in the Autumn 1997 issue of the Crown Imperial journal, page 26 he says - "Its use [the RA Lance Sergeants sleeve badge] was extended to ATS sergeants with anti aircraft and other RA units, but only whilst serving with them."
He also goes on to say - "This badge was also adopted for use by ATS kine-theodolite operators." From what I've been able to gather the regulars lance sergeants sleeve badge was worn by the former group and the kine-theodolite operators may have worn the cannon on a blue background. The one in my collection is on a pale blue rectangular background. Here is a picture of some ATS RA AA battery girls wearing the artillery patch. The caption says they are reviewing AA gun camera film. I cannot tell for sure which way the cannon is facing - left or right? Terry |

I don't believe that a lance-sergeant was eligible to wear the 'gun' badge on the arm. It was for RA NCO above the rank of lance sergeant.
ACI 906/42 states that ATS sergeants in Hy AA (Mixed) batteries will wear a gun badge above the chevrons to distinguish them from RA lance-sergeants. This distinction was only to be worn while serving in a mixed battery and was to be removed on posting elsewhere. It was the RA collar badge that was officially supposed to be worn above the left breast pocket. I think the yellow gun on blue was the formation patch of Shoeburyness Garrison. Keith |

Interesting Keith. My primary source for ATS badges is the one I referenced, so I am always looking for additional information.
Yes, I believe you are right about the blue background artillery badge. Stay well, Terry |
