Default Grenadier Guards Cap. F.S.

Greetings all.

I'd be grateful for guidance as to the circumstances under which a Grenadier Guardsman at home in the early 2nd World War period might have worn a khaki Field Service 'side cap' (if at all).

Much obliged

JF

Not Grenadier, but I think that Brian Leigh Davis's " British Army Uniforms and Equipment of World War Two" shows a Scots Guards wearing a FSC, perhaps they were worn by the Guards on the introduction of BD but not for long? I have no evidence to support that supposition though.
I can't find the thread but there was a suggestion on forum that the FSC with GG badge may have been worn by the Royal Household's Home Guard unit.

No Leigh not that one. Its nice though. Someone of the Forum has one, i asked if i could have a copy of the image. But they didn't get back to me. The Forum " War Relics " has one, but the do say it could be Buckingham Home Guard i believe. And a site " Worthpoint " is showing one. Ill have a look in my reference folders.

Strange that the Scots Guards would wear a piece of headgear without a band of dicing.

Approaching my question another way, is it more likely that the Foot Guards at home would wear a khaki Service Dress cap in other than working dress?

On page 110 of Brian Davis' WW2 book is a picture of 2nd Bn Coldstream soldiers training for Combined Ops in 1942 wearing the FS cap

David Erskine's The Scots Guards 1919-1955 has an appendix on the Dress of the Regiment which records For the fatigue cap the Regiment was first issued with a universally unpopular, khaki fore and aft designed for wear on the side of the head and therefore very liable to fall off during drill. The Fifth battalion found them very unsuitable for skiing. In due course these were replaced by black or khaki berets.

So although short-lived and unloved the FS cap was indeed worn.

There are a number of photographs online showing Men serving with the 5th Battalion Scots Guards whilst Ski Training wearing the cap in question.

Regards Simon.
