Default Royal Sappers & Miners WA

Dear Members, Seeking some information on a Royal Sappers & Miners Head Dress vent.
There are two images attached - an image of a Gorgon? the Head Dress Vent and an image of a Shako/Stove Pipe Head Dress with vent positioned on the back.
The question I would love some help with is, When and Why was a Gorgon chosen to be the vent.
Especially as 'Follow the Sapper' is the rule - which means they would be 'turning to stone' their own support. Confused?
Regards and many thanks,
BCCU

That Gorgon vent was used on a variety of shakos for a long time, for example the HLI used well into the 20th century. I don't know the significance, but it goes back to antiquity and there is probably no definitive answer.
