Just seen this.
It's a fantastic photo, my favourite shots are Victorian/Edwardian Cavalry.
Thank you for sharing

And I do believe it is a 13th Hussar by the pill box hat, and white facings.

I completely missed your original post but have seen it now. A superbly detailed photograph.

Thanks Chris, Leigh & Simon for commenting.

the clarity of the picture, especially on his pill box hat and insignia made it worthy of comment imo and was worth a bump.

From memory, badges on facing colour were forbidden after about 1870, thereafter scarlet-clad troops had scarlet backed badges, with the exception of Household troops, and blue clad had blue backings, again excepting Household troops.
This was sometimes flouted, especially by cavalry. As above.

Does anyone know if/when facing backing was officially reintroduced please?

Note the regimental pattern padded chevrons. Very nice. To my understanding, badges on facing colors for the Cavalry started to appear in the Edwardian period, not all regiments at the same time however.

I can't remember the name of the series but these hand coloured photographic post cards are Edwardian.

RACG ledger at NA:

1872. Cavalry all badges to be on tunic cloth not facing colour;

The infantry had been coerced by 1870, the most likely year is 1868.

The Corps and Departments seem ignored.

The RACD ledger notes that I made suggest a resumption by 1896 ....... it looks like late Victorian/ Edwardian. I will look at my copy of Cavalry Arm Badges.

[I really should know all this ........ perhaps I did once!]
