Just a few enameled and gold home front/recruiting badges relating to Glamorgan.

Hi Jonathan

What did Rees & Kirby do please? I have one of their badges and have always wondered.

Sometime I'll post a pic of my Newcastle Emlyn silver tribute medal. It's engraved in Welsh to the reverse but no name unfortunately....I once met a dear old Welsh lady who told me that it was a great place to buy ladies' fashions!

Strangely enough, there was a very high end ladies fashion shop on the high street as recently as prior to the Covid lockdown.
Nice to the Curran badge. spent some time there as a student during summer hols filling oil bottles.

Yes, well that was what this very nice lady told me. I must dig out my tribute medal. It's made by either Fattorini or Vaughton's with a charming vignette of the castle in the centre.

When I got it the blue enamel had been massively chipped but a very skilled friend replaced it with the real stuff. A nice bottle of wine well earned!

If only they had named it....

Would there have been many WW1 enlistments from there?

Rees & Kirby were steel workers/manufactures :

Rhandyirmwyn Bridge
A cast plate on the bridge records the names of the engineer, H A Ellis of Swansea, the builders Rees and Kirby Ltd of Morriston, and the building date 1913.

I’ve got a little Welsh language book somewhere that lists the war dead of Cardigan & the surrounding area. I think it’s at my place in West Wales but I’ll dig it out and see if it includes NE when I’m next down there. There were a lot of enlistments generally in West Wales. Carmarthen had its own battalion (15th) in The Welsh. They were part of the 38th Div attack on Mametz & suffered heavy casualties.

Many thanks for your reply. I do have a photo but it doesn't show the reverse which has the inscription in Welsh so that's an excuse to dig it out and renew my acquaintance with it!
