India cap badge Reference Book
Hi all,
I'm after a good India cap badge Reference Book and wondered if someone could steer me in the right direction, mid to late Victorian up to 1952 Cheers Kev. |

A gent called Ashok Nath, ex-IA Armoured Corps, now resident in Scandanavia, brought out a book on Indian badges a few years ago. Unfortunately, it was limited edition and, I think, priced at about L75, which is why I didn't buy one, but they may be out there still. before that there was precious little and, I think, nothing specifically Indian.
Sorry I don't know of anything else. Maybe some of the more up to date readers will be able to help. |

It was on the Indian cavalry, I think it was called 'Izat'. He did intend to bring out others to infantry, gurkha's etc. What about Cox's book?

There is always `Military Badges of The British Empire 1914- 18` by Cox, not specifically to the Indian Army but has almost 100 A4 pages on the Indian Army Badges used during WWI, much cheaper as well! Maybe i should eat my words, just checked, £104 used from Amazon! Picked mine up when just out of print for £45 a few years ago! The Canadian Artillery section was wholly superseded though with a new errata chapter on the subject.
Cheers, Dave

I have the Ashok book and Cox's. The Ashok one is very impressive (I thought it was expensive at the time at 90+ukp, but it covers everything and I wish there was one like it on the UK cavalry regiments that had the same level of detail). As mentioned, it is all Indian cavalry. The Cox one isn't bad considering there asn't anything else that I am aware of. If its a specific regiment you are after pm me. David |

What I think I will do during the week is sort out the one's I can work out for myself and the one's I can't, I'll take some pics and re-open this thread up and perhaps you guy's can help me out. In the mean time I think I'll take a look at the Ashok book as I would like to get into the India badges a bit more. Kev. |

Surprisingly I managed to work out most of them for myself but there are a few I'm stuck on, so if anybody can help I'd be much obliged.
Here are the pic's, "a bit crap I know but they should be OK". Kev. |

13th Rajputs (The Shekawati Regiment)
1903-22, became 10th (Shekawati) Bn, 6th Rajputana Rifles. 11th Sikh Regiment from 1922 until after 1950 (regiment went to India and became The Sikh Regiment); not all battalions of the regiment wore this badge though. I guess this being a colar badge. I am not that good at those. 2nd Punjab Regiment from 1922, must be a collar because it is mirrored. Went to India and is now The Punjab Regiment same, also a collar, the cap badge has a scroll underneath. 4th Bombay Grenadiers I am not quite sure because I know a badge with a running horse instead of a number 4. But it could be early usage. The regiment became 4th Indian Grenadiers in 1945, then The Indian Grenadiers It is now The Grenadier Regiment in the Indian army. Obvious a crowned cypher VRI (Victoria Regina Imperatrix). Can not identify further. Just the two pennies I can throw into the box. from 1922. I am not quite sure

An afterburner.
It is a pity, but the first Shekawati badge is severely damaged. The two knives should each be symmetric, see the single knife in picture #3.

Could also be the case. The picture I have of the 45th show it in black and the design is a bit different. And it was certainly carried over by at least some of the battalions (except the 1st Bn and the 5th Bn) in the new 11th.
