Generally speaking, an 8 pointed star with crown on and obscuring the top point of the star. On the body of the star the number "80" within a circle carrying the wording "Royal Tyrone Militia". In white metal/silver.
There are several subtle variations of this design drawn in Mc Donnell's booklet none of which are dated. The regiment was designated the 80th as a result of the ballot of 1833, prior to that it was the 2nd regiment thus, you can be certain that buttons carried the designation "80" in the 1850s, though which exact design of the ones illustrated by Mc Donnell was worn during the 1850's I do not know. PM me your contact details if you would like me to send you a scan of the drawings. The link below illustrates the general design concept. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedi...inal-426564000 On the re-organization of the militia in 1854 Tyrone found 2 units, The Royal Tyrone Fusiliers Militia and The Tyrone Artillery Militia which, in 1875, amalgamated with the Londonderry and Armagh Artilleries to form The Mid Ulster Artillery. The data above refers to the Infantry unit. John |
