Default Royal Navy Transport Service

Hi Gents,
I recently won these badges at auction and thought I would share these pics
for interested parties. They are 3 Officers badges for the little known Royal Navy Transport Service.
I have searched the Forum about the R.N.T.S and have found little information about the Service so I thought I'd post these badges for all to see.
The badge that really interests me is the one on the top left which just has the lettering "R.N.T" this appears to be the oldest piece in the collection.
You comments are most welcome.
Colin

Default Royal Navy Transport Service

A great selection of badges!

The Royal Naval Transport Service (RNTS) was established on 1st December 1916. Officers were appointed to serve as Naval Transport Officers in ports in the UK and abroad. They supervised the transport of troops and equipment to the various theatres of war and they were stationed in the various ports of embarkation/disembarkation.

The ranks of Officers in the RNTS (and their equivalent rank in the Royal Navy) were Principal Naval Transport Officer (if a Flag Officer, the rank he held; otherwise Commodore 2nd Class), Divisional Naval Transport Officer (Captain), Transport Officer, 1st grade (Commander, unless already of higher rank when he retained that rank), Transport Officer, 2nd grade (Lieutenant-Commander), Transport Officer, 3rd grade (Lieutenant) and Transport Officer, 4th grade (Sub-Lieutenant). These appointments were open to 'Retired, Emergency, and Temporary Officers.'

Royal Navy ratings, chiefly Writers and Signalmen, were attached to the RNTS to assist Naval Transport Officers in the ports to which they were assigned.

Although I have not been able to find a definitive date the RNTS appears to have been disbanded in 1920-21.

Pete

Stunning badges, thanks for showing them. If the 'RNT' badge is indeed for the Transport service it must be very rare as it can't have been in use for more than a year or two!
Cheers,
Alex

I now think the RNT button I put in the RNR (Trawler) thread belongs to this service.
See: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...250#post369250

One of the historic pictures put in by Voltigeur said Royal Navy, but the cap badge said "Transport". It was noticed, but it is nice to add it to this thread.
Here is the link: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...d.php?p=368661
It is the first image titled "Lieutenant P G Hussey. Unit: Royal Navy"

Here is the above document in its original format.

Now we need to find the official dress regulations for the service.

Extract from Regulations for Skippers (Trawler Section), Royal Naval Reserve. 1913

https://digital.nls.uk/british-milit...chive/94292158

This regulation is repeated in the 1921 regulations -
So, if officers of the Trawler Section were wearing RNR buttons then it is more likely that the RNT buttons are HM/RN Transport.
