Leeds Pals Cap Badge
Good afternoon all,
Currently looking at a Leeds Pals cap badge and would very much welcome members thoughts as to whether it's original. My understanding is that original ones all have smaller dots on the top part of the shield around the 3 stars and that the legs holding the shield should be wider and the legs shorter ? However, an identical badge sold on Bosley's Regimental Badges website hence I'm a little puzzled. Many thanks, Mike |

Hi Mike,
leaning 'budgie' not a good sign. Mark |

The badge you show is from a die that is regarded as being a fake die and features in the infamous Marsh catalogue. This one is regarded as being from the genuine die. Some dealers say otherwise and sell you it as genuine and even the best have off days. Alan |

One on IWM site has 'budgie' standing to attention.

The originals only came with lugs whilst many fakes and Tramways had sliders. Alan |

Some caution should be taken with the "leaning budgie" method of identifying a fake badge. Bearing in mind the age of these badges and the fact that they where often stored in a draw for many years, the "budgie" can be pushed down and distorted. Always weigh up everything before dismissing a badge.

Proud chested budgie and non inclined owl heads good signs, but agree individual badges can become distorted or 'manipulated'. Ram shape and position of his horns also worth looking at. Regards, Paul.

I look at the "dot configuration pattern" around the stars, always helpful if compared with a genuine example.

Also the horns. If they break the top edge of the fleece they are not correct.

Morning all,
Does the attached photo confirm Nozzer's thought's around caution over dismissing a genuine badge because of the 'leaning budgie' ? Clearly, it didn't take long for the one on the right to be knocked out of shape ! PS. Managed to find a good 'un so thanks all for your help. Mike |
