Default Mystery WWII Army jacket badges

My grandad served in WWII, I believe 59th Staffordshire then 11th Armoured divisions.

I have a photo of him in uniform, I'm not sure of the timing. I gather he was promoted to Sgt at some point so I believe this was before D-Day.

Can anyone help identify the badges on his upper arm? A cross of St George on a shield and a couple of horizontal bars lower down?
Thanks for any pointers

Hello jdp80, welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts.
The patch on his tunic appears to be the21st Army Group HQ and L of C troops patch. The horizontal two colour bar is an arm of service strip.

Blimey, he's blancoed his stripes white and the crease on his battledress arm is sharp enough to shave with. A proud soldier.

The colours on the arm-of-service stripe would suggest that he belonged to one of the following at the time:

Royal Artillery
Royal Armoured Corps
Royal Army Service Corps
Pioneer Corps
Reconnaisance Corps

...but not infantry.

It all depends on the specific colours (see attached).

Best regards

That's great, thanks.
So the badge is blue on yellow as per
http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30071899

I seem to remember in my cadet days wearing a brassard on my right arm. I think it's a brassard in the picture - might the original photo be flipped, meaning the colours are reversed?

When were these photos typically taken? Pre d-day or after May 45? I guess there wasn't much time for photos like this inbetween ?

Hello,

No not on a brassard, sewn onto the sleeve.

Probably taken after the war.

regards

To see if the photo is flipped show the whole photo, then the front buttons will show it.

On the basis of a BW photograph I don't think it is possible to be more specific. Assuming a blue cross on a yellow shield, this will have been worn by tens of thousands of troops mostly in 21 Army Group's rear areas.

Is not 21st Army Group LOC blue on red rather than blue on yellow? (Or was that blue on red France, blue on yellow Low County?)
