Default Household Cavalry - Puzzled?

I have always been led to believe that the Household Cavalry "Garter Strap" Cap badge was for wear in the Forage Dress Cap by both Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards and later RHG/D? When it comes to "Officers" badges, I've seen a few OSD finished lugged reproductions or should it be "Fakes" as it is a badge that should not be? Seems they may be doing them with blades as well now?

Andy

By OSD I presume you mean die cast ones shouldn't have loops and always should have blades being headress wear ?

I think I might have mentioned this to Andy,

A couple of months ago, I had acquired a lugged and bronzed Life Guards badge that was missing a lug, when I went to repair it, the badge melted, it was lead ????

Dave.

Keith,
by OSD I meant the finish (Bronzed), there would probably not be lugged collars as Guards Regiments collars are rather scarce in any finish!

I'm 100% certain your badge is a Gilding metal ORs head-dress/Cap badge, that has either been in the ground at some time during it's lifetime or just had a hard life? Here's a polished one like yours!

Best regards

Andy

This is my latest find. Die cast and lugged. Came from an antiques shop in Somerset priced at a very reasonable £5.

Alan,
if it is OSD then I suspect it is fake, I've got the one shown below which IMO is a top quality fake and cost several times what you paid! This pattern badge is for universal wear by all Regts of the Household Cavalry in the Coloured Forage Cap, Regimental badges are/were worn in the SD cap.

If its a fake then its a very good one. Can't say I have seen any others for sale anywhere else so I don't think its a repro that's in current production.

Alan,
here's a Firmin made and marked ORs badge, note the "Hanging V", also the lugs on the genuine badges tend to be at 2 and 10 o'clock whereas many copies have them at 3 and 9 o'clock.

Andy,

Playing the devil's advocate the differences you describe could be described as a maker's variation. Without them being sold by known faker's it is rather hard to be certain that the maker was modern.

Alan

indeed :

non-hanging V

Alan,
there should not be OSD badges, is yours OSD or Gm? If there were OSD they probably would not have lugs either? Below is the rear of the ORs badge.

Alan,
the thread was started in relation to OSD badges, I think we're on crossed wires? I'd still be cautious with the ORs badges too!

Quite possibly as the first sentence in post 1 does not actually seem complete! I see you meant for wear in Officer Forage caps.
